Aunt Debbie and Uncle Mitch Go H.A.M.

I read this article on Rookie Mag a while ago by Pixie Casey and I thought I'd post it now because I found it so hilarious. Why can't I know people like this. Sigh.

My aunt Debbie and uncle Mitch are the best, and I love them. Aunt Debbie tries really hard to keep up with pop culture, and sometimes she turns to me for help (much to Mitch’s dismay). Below is a sampling of the emails I’ve received from them over the past few months:

9/28/11
Dear Evie,
Are you still into the Jonas Brothers? I saw one of them on a granola bar commercial the other day. Not the eyebrows one, the other one. Rick? I think it was Rick. It made me think of you. Miss you!

XO,
Aunt Debbie

9/29/11
Dear Evie,
Nick! I can’t believe I remembered that wrong. Has it really been four years since we went to see them in concert? I guess it would make sense that you aren’t into them as much anymore. Who are you into now? Let me know and I’ll try to get tickets. Uncle Mitch sends his love.

XO,
Aunt Debbie

10/1/11
Thanks for sending that Skrillex video. At first I thought it was broken, because the song sounded a bit like the Volvo did last spring, right before it broke down: womp-womp-womp-womp. Uncle Mitch informed me that it’s supposed to sound “like a dying copy machine got into a fight with Chewbacca at a haunted-house rave on Mars.” Is there anyone else you’d like to see in concert? Not sure Uncle Mitch and I could handle Skrillex for two hours. It’s a bit like The Polar Express, you know? When people get too old to hear the bell? Dubstep is our bell, love.

Miss you much,
Aunt Debbie

10/1/11
Eves—
What the hell was that video you sent us? Take it from your mother’s brother: if you want to listen to something loud that will piss off your parents, forget this Skrillex crap and listen to SLAYER instead.

SLAYERRRRRR,
Uncle Mitch

10/11/11
Good news! We got those Taylor Swift tickets you wanted. Uncle Mitch knows a guy who knows a gal and we’re going to be in the third row. Well, you and I are, Uncle Mitch refuses to come. Typical Mitch! Do you think we need to dress up? Every time I see Taylor Swift, she’s in a ball gown. I don’t want to look like a mess in comparison. If you need glitter for your hair, let me know. I think I still have some left over from a phase I went through in the late ’80s.

Love,
Aunt Debbie

10/17/11
I’m so glad you liked the show! I liked it too. She was great!
Quick question: what does “going ham” on popcorn mean? I heard someone say it at the movies the other day: “I’m about to go ham on this popcorn.” Do they put ham on popcorn? I didn’t see any at the concession stand. Sounds kind of gross!

Miss you,
Auntie D

10/26/11
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I’m about to go H.A.M. on this piece of ice cream cake. (Did I use that right? I think so.)

Love,
Aunt Debbie

10/23/11
Hey, Evelyn—
Please teach your aunt a new word. So far this week, she’s “gone ham” on the following: the vacuuming, a frozen pizza, a Joan Didion book, a crossword puzzle, 15 minutes of Just Dance 2, paying bills, and watching seven episodes of Breaking Bad in a row on Netflix. I don’t even think she’s using it right at this point. Just teach her something else, please? Make something up, if you have to. I don’t care at this point. Send her whatever you can think of.

Listen to Pink Floyd,
Uncle M.

10/27/11
Thank you so much for sending me this Kreayshawn video! She’s a riot. I really like her bow. Uncle Mitch wasn’t as impressed, and seemed a bit miffed that she said something vaguely negative about Arby’s. He really likes Arby’s. He’s probably about to go ham on some curly fries as we speak.

XO,
Aunt Debbie

P.S. How do you pronounce “Kreayshawn?” Also, what is “swag?”

11/8/11
FYI: There is a sale going on at J.Crew. Just bought two Jackie cardigans for under $70. SWAG! SWAG!

SWAG,
Aunt Swag

11/9/11
“Swag” is worse. Make it stop!

Never Mind the Bieber, Listen to the Sex Pistols,
Mitchapalooza

11/11/11
Thanks for letting me know that “swag” is over. What’s the new buzz? (Is “buzz” still a thing?)

Love,
Aunt Debbie

11/17/11
Just got back from a shopping trip to Macy’s and I have to ask: why does Justin Bieber have a fragrance? And why is the bottle reminiscent of a Georgia O’Keefe painting? Is he interested in art? Are you a fan of his? He seems like a nice young man, though I don’t care for his hairdo. Would you like a bottle of his perfume for your birthday? If not, what would you like?

Miss you tons,
Aunt Debbie

11/20/11
Happy happy! So glad you liked your gift. Uncle Mitch picked it out. Please apologize to your parents on our behalf.

Rock on,
Aunt Debbie

11/20/11
Glad you liked the guitar. Warning: if you try to learn Katy Perry songs on it, it will burst into flames.

Quadrophenia > Tommy,
Uncle Mitch

11/26/11
Finally saw Breaking Dawn!!! It was great, didn’t you think? Uncle Mitch hated it. Typical Mitch!

Team Edward,
Aunt Debbie

12/4/11
Who sings that song that goes “every day I’m shufflin’?” That is a catchy song! Is it the Black Eyed Peas? They are a lot of fun.

Everyday Shufflin’,
Aunt Debbie

12/4/11
Thanks for telling me the name of that band. How do you pronounce LMFAO? Luh-muh-foh?
Also, the Black Eyed Peas are taking a break?! Why isn’t anyone talking about this!?!?!?!

Bummed,
Aunt Debbie

12/5/11
Hey, thanks for introducing your aunt to LMFAO. This is sarcasm, by the way.

Get the Led Out,
Uncle Mitch

12/10/11
Dear Evie,
We miss you, too! We’ll see you at Christmas. It’s a three-hour drive, so we’ll definitely listen to that playlist you put together for us. Did you put a lot of LMFAO on there? I hope so. Uncle Mitch hopes so too, I’m sure. Can’t wait to see you!

Love,
Aunt Debbie

PS: What on earth is a Lana Del Rey!?!?

Products used: OPI Natural Nail Base Coat, OPI Pine Snow, Revlon Lunar, OPI Top Coat

I had been meaning to post a picture of my yin yang nails that I painted a week ago and here they are! My nails are starting to grow longer and I'm really happy. But yesterday, one my thumb nails broke so I was really sad because it's not as square-ish anymore. Sigh.

I'm hoping to do an pastel ombré nail next! Probably when these nails start to chip more, but this OPI top coat really works wonders.

P.S. Ignore the chipped left thumb nail please. Haha.

Here's a lovely song from a while ago that I forgot about:

diamond supply co shirt, h&m parka, garage leggings, thrifted bag, vans shoes

Lazy day outfit. I went to Metrotown yesterday quickly before going to school to get my report card to pick up a new Kiehl's cleanser because my old one ran out. I usually get the regular Ultra Facial Cleanser, but this time I noticed an oil-free version of it and I decided to give it a try. Hopefully it works. The lady there told me that it's really good if your face has unwanted shine and oiliness because it helps get rid of it (according to her). After buying it, I still had some time left before heading to school so I went to H&M. I noticed that they had a lot of dresses there for only $20. I had been meaning to buy a semi-formal dress for next year (my grad year, aahh) especially for semi-formal events such as Winter Formal. Plus, I needed a little black dressI found this really cute one:

I really wanted a dress like this, with a lace top part, and right when I saw it, I got so excited, and when I found it in my size, I almost died in happiness. Hehe. After I found it, I didn't even want to look at anything else, so I basically just hurried to the fitting room to try it on and yay it fit! I also wanted to get this dress though:

It's kind of tight, but I think it's cute. I feel like it's a bit too... sexy for me. Haha is that even the word? I don't even know, but I kind of liked it. I ended up not getting it though.

Speaking of dresses, it reminds me that my grad year is coming up, and so Artona (grad) photos are coming soon and I need a dress. I believe it's in the beginning of November, which leaves me with a few months to find a dress. Believe me, I am very, very picky about formal dresses. I went to BCBG Max Azria to check out some dresses from there and I found this really cute cut-out dress:

Both my friend and I decided that we both really loved it and we both wanted it and that we were gonna try and get it before one another. Haha. But I don't know, it looks better on the rack than here on a person. But I really liked it. I'm really into that mesh/lace top look right now, as you can probably tell. Haha.

And then prom. I don't know know what I want as for dress silhouette/style, but that's a while away. In June. I have plenty of time. I just really hope I don't fall into the situation where I'm doing last-minute dress shopping, trying to find a prom dress.

Thinking about graduating next year kind of scares me. I want to graduate because of the independence after that and everything, but at the same time there's the feeling that I'm getting older, and things are getting more serious, and now I actually have to focus on my future and jobs and etc. Ugh. I don't even know what I want to do. Next year, I have to really try hard in school, and try to get into university. I'm aiming for UBC general sciences, but at this rate, I don't even think I will get in. I've been procrastinating way too much. I told myself that next year I will do all my homework, and do daily review on my biology notes so I can grasp all the information and do better on the tests, but that's easier said than done. I just really hope I can get into UBC or else my parents will probably be disappointed since my older sister did. Ugh.

I feel like I've just rushed through adolescence and that I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have, and now I'm graduating soon. I hate this feeling. I really do.

le temps de l'amour

american apparel button-down blouse and sweater, garage leggings, thrifted bag, aldo flats

Today I went shopping with my friend Kimberly, yay! Sadly, I didn't find anything that I really liked today. Most of the stuff I saw that I liked were either too expensive (because I am a poor jobless east side teenager who dreams of someday winning the Lotto Max $50 million jackpot and moving to the west side and being all rich and stuff) or not in my size. Sigh. I went to Urban Outfitters and I swear, everything is so much more expensive now! Argh I'm too poor to buy nice shit. But something that disturbed me were all the shorts that looked like this lying around the store:

☯ omg so soft grunge lol ☯

I'M KIDDING. Oh god. I wanted to throw up. Why, UO, why? I mean, I thought these shorts were cute like a year ago before I even heard of this strange 'soft grunge' style, but now that Tumblr has been bombarded with pictures of weird 'soft grunge' girls with shorts like this, I have just lost all liking of these shorts. I THOUGHT YOU WOULD HAVE MORE DIGNITY THAN THIS, UO.

I also went to Zara because I know they're having this big semi-annual sale right now, and I really wanted to look for dresses for next school year's events/dances like Winter Formal and etc etc. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything (but the dresses were really, really cheap!). I tried on this cute palm tree dress though:

It was a bit too big for me, but I kind of liked it. It was only $30 too! It reminds me of that Topshop blouse and skirt that came in a similar pattern, and I really liked those. But then I realized that this isn't really my style anymore, and that I don't even wear dresses anymore, so I didn't buy it. I kind of wish I bought it now, but I'm not sure. If I had gotten it, it would've been final sale though, so I don't know.

And FINALLLLLY I watched Moonrise Kingdom today!! I've been waiting to watch this since I saw Tavi (thestylerookie) post stills from the trailer! And oh my god, this movie was so cute and I loved it. I loved everything about it - the actors, the music, the wardrobe, the camera angles, the vintage look to it (since it is set in the 1960's). I loved Suzy's makeup and her clothes especially. Ahh. I love this song especially. 'Le Temps De L'Amour' by Françoise Hardy, it's so beautiful:

I'll make some stills and post them (okay yeah, I may have overdone it but ugh I love it):

I really wish I could pull off this teal hair colour. I really like it, but I can never imagine myself with my whole head this colour. I would probably just stick safely with a dip-dye, but this is just so pretty. There is a girl a year older than me at my school and her hair was this colour except maybe brighter for prom, and I think she pulled it off because it's her style, I guess. Like, for prom and the graduation ceremony, she wore JC Litas. And, she dyes her hair like I swear almost every month yet her hair still looks nice. Plus she's Asian and she pulls off this hair. I think I'd just look like a weirdo though. *cries*

nail inspiration

I found some really cute nail art on a blog called omoimono and looking at these make me so excited to paint my nails gradient/ombré. I probably won't do the jewels on it but these nails are really cute.

This week has been pretty boring, except for the math final which I did horribly in and talked about in a recent post. Sigh. But other than that, it has been basically just sitting at home not doing much. I went shopping and bought 5 pairs of sale undies from American Eagle which I already talked about and stuff. I also returned the American Apparel disco pants because they're just too shiny for my taste. I also finally got the June/July issue of NYLON and I have yet to read it. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

I painted my nails a yin yang design like I did last summer. My nails are actually starting to grow and I have not picked at them thus far and so they are actually long(er than usual) and I shaped them square-ish/squoval-ish with my Sephora glass nail file and yay. Glass nail files are so good, I'm not even kidding. Like, those cheap emery ones are shit compared to these. YOU HAVE TO CONVERT TO GLASS NAIL FILES. Once you go glass, you can't go back. Haha that kind of rhymed. Kind of. But yeah, they file so much faster and apparently they don't go dull so yay! I'm really happy that I finally painted them yin yang again and they will probably start chipping within a week which will make me start picking at them so next week I'll probably remove it and repaint it. I'm planning to do an ombré look with my Revlon nail polishes in Minted, Lilac Pastelle, and Electric (mint green, light puirply-pink, and yellow). I was planning to do that look this week actually, but I found out that I ran out of makeup sponges and so I couldn't do it, but now I bought some and so next week I'll probably do it. Hopefully it turns out cute. ^_^

I really want to watch Moonrise Kingdom because their trailer is so cute and ahh. I wanted to watch it ever since I saw Tavi's post about it. I'm gonna go with my friend Kimberly on Tuesday this week and I can't wait to watch it! Here's the trailer:

Anyway, this evening I had a volunteer appreciation BBQ for volunteering at the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival! It rained so it was indoors so that sucked. And the food wasn't really that good. It was just burgers and hotdogs and I got a burger but I wish they melted cheese onto the patty but they didn't so it was like slapping on a whole piece of cheese right over it and blah. They had tortilla chips with guacamole and I really love guacamole but it ran out. They also had salad and potato salad but I hate potato salad and that was about it. They had a raffle to give away (I'm assuming) remaining t-shirts, towels, reusable metal water bottles, and hats. They never called out my number sadly, but they had so many that basically at the end they went around and handed out the remaining t-shirts and towels to everyone. I got a t-shirt in large so I can wear it for pyjamas! Yay I love free stuff ahaha I'm such a cheap asian.

When I was volunteering for the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, it was pretty boring. The first day rained like crazy and we were inside a gymnasium doing kid's activities. There were finger painting, friendship bracelets, colouring, etc and there were 3 bouncy castles!!! AhhhHHh the childhood memories! I always loved bouncy castles. Hehe. I got to go inside this huge bouncy pirate ship with this inflatable climbing wall in it and basically I had to make sure kids were playing safely and I had to help kids get up and down the wall. There was a really adorable girl named Brooke or something like that and she was so cute! Ahh and there was this little asian girl with the HUGEST eyes ever and she was so tiny and cute but once she got up the climbing wall she was so scared to get down so we had to help her down and then she ran and never came back. Aw. Haha. But I made a friendship bracelet and I have it on right now! It's a really basic one, just 3 pastel-ish colours braided together with some clear beads. On the second day of volunteering, my friend Karman and I had to basically sit outside for like 4 and a half hours and watch a traffic barricade that was located near a performing stage and we had to move the barricade to let perfomers' cars in and stuff. We also got a walkie-talkie which was cool but kind of scary. It was so boring but thank god we got chairs and our team leaders delivered us food (I think they were 1-2 day old Subway sandwiches) and some soda and a bunch of chocolate. SMARTIES. I LOVE SMARTIES CHOCOLATE. I ate like 14 of those little boxes within the two days I volunteered and I felt like such a fatass but I can't help it. SMARTIES ARE FUCKING DELICIOUS. Anyway, here's a pic of Karman and I being ultra cool while volunteering:

Yesterday's shopping outfit! It was actually warm! ACTUALLY WARM. The weird thing is, the sky started turning all cloudy and ugly yet it was still really warm which was cool. At least my summer break is starting out all right. Today's weather seems pretty good too! I mean, despite the fact that it's cloudy as fuck, when you go outside, it's actually warm.

I bought 5 pairs of undies from American Eagle (they have cute undies okay) and they were on sale for 5 for $10! That's a good deal I think, seeing as the undies are $7.50 each (talk about overpriced omg). Yay I love sale undies. I also got a dark red Diamond Supply Co tank top from Zumiez for $40. Yay!

Anyway, I wrote my math final on Tuesday and it went bad. Like, REALLY BAD. Oh god, thinking about it makes me want to cry. Oh god. Like, it was 48 questions all multiple choice, and I think I spent too much time in the beginning, like I just couldn't think right and I was doing each question so slowly. And then I realized that one hour had gone by and we were halfway through the time and I wasn't even halfway through the exam yet and I don't know why but I got really mad. Like, I just got really pissed at the exam and everything and I remember thinking to myself stuff like "Holy fuck. What the fuck is this shit. I don't want to fucking do this anything. This is so fucking stupid. Fuck this. Ughh fucking fuckkkk. I don't want to fucking think anymore. FUCK I WAS WANNA FUCKING START MY FUCKING SUMMER." Like, I could feel my hands almost clenching. But I continued with the exam and I totally ran out of time so I guessed a whole chapter and guessed all answer C because apparently C is the most common answer and besides, if I guessed all C I must've gotten at least 1 right! Right? Right? Haha oh god I probably failed. Oh well. My summer break has started! Kind of. I still have to pick up my report card in a week, but still! NO MORE EXAMS, NO MORE CLASSES! I'M DONE. I'M DONE GRADE 11.

P.S. That isn't a weird tan line on my leg! It's a bandaid! I cut myself while shaving hehe oops. ^_^
