2 girls, 2 art galleries

This summer break is flying by and I've barely been posting on this thing! I can't believe july is ending already (I swear it feels like july just started)

So a while ago (june 9 was it??) Madalene and I spent the day together going to art galleries and eating. Two of our fave tings!!!

First we went to this place on Main called the Wallflower and we shared a breakfast poutine. We weren't too hungry and it was actually quite filling!! And we fucking love poutines lol. I didn't get a picture of the food but here's a picture of the exterior :~) I love neon signs lol

Afterwards we headed to the New Westminster New Media Gallery. The gallery space itself was very small but it was really nice in there. Madalene and I got a tour (we were the only ones there lol). This exhibition is called POPart and all the components involve balloons (pretty cool imo!!!)

This one was particularly creepy to me. It is called Work No. 202: Half the air in a given space by Martin Creed. We were allowed to go inside and try to get to the glass wall on the other side but when you are in there, it is extremely claustrophobic and dark and I was like I'm gonna die in here and never find my way out (ok that's an exaggeration but still!!!). I was like nervously laughing in there but meanwhile in my mind I was thinking fuck it get me out of here!!! When I emerged from the sea of balloons, my hair was an absolute mess (I didn't tie it up or anything and it was clinging to every balloon it passed by!!!) but I could only laugh because I looked so ridiculous. The tour guide said that in other installations, different coloured balloons are used (eg. pink, blue, etc). I wish the balloons were pink because I'm sure the experience would've been a lot more pleasant being in a lil bubble gum pink world.

This piece is Highlight and it is by Ceal Floyer. I found this one really interesting because (from what I remember the tour guide saying) the artist wanted to depict that the characteristic light reflection shape on a balloon in cartoons that shows the viewer that the balloon is round and shiny is in actuality not very realistic at all. The balloon was sprayed matte to avoid other lights from reflecting off of it so the only thing cast upon it is the shape of a (almost) white marking that does not look real at all.

Oh my goodness. This fucking work lol. It's called ADA (analogue interactive installation) by Karina Smigla-Bobinski. It started out with white walls and inside there is a giant ball that just floats around slowly, and each of those black sticks coming out of it is a piece of charcoal. The ball is pushed around the room and it leaves markings where the charcoal meets the wall. And just my luck!!!!! I WORE ALL FUCKING WHITE THERE. So I tried to stay away from that monster haha

ready to kick the shit out of that monster lmao
can you see the fear in my eyes

The final piece was Actions by William Lamson. It is a series of 33 video sketches of the artist popping and destroying balloons in different manners. I didn't get a picture of this one but behind the screen (where the projector and a cute exit sign sat) was really pleasing to the eye haha.

Here's lil ol me walking down the stairs of the Anvil Centre where the New Media Gallery is. Check out my one year old roots (it's practically an ombre).

Afterwards Madalene and I went downtown and got something to drink at Small Victory which was such a cute lil cafe!!

 ~wall details~
Madalene feels awk taking "candid" (lol not-so-candid candid) pics
I look like I'm like "tf that bitch just say bout me?????"

Next we went to the Vancouver Art Gallery (I still can't over the fact that it's abbreviation is VAG. VAG for fucks sake). The last time we had gone was during reading break so it was all new exhibitions to explore hehe. One of the big exhibitions at the time (and it's still there) is Geoffrey Farmer's "How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth?"

Madz being a good friend and pointing out yellow things bc of my yellow aesthetic

The detail in this next one is superb!!! Each of the little pieces were cut-outs from magazines and whatnot and they were held up and supported by strips made from those same magazines. The cutting was so detailed and it's so cool how all these little simple components make up this huge complex timeline of figures.

 don't mind me

This next installation is Let's Make the Water Turn Black. It was a really sensory stimulating (over-stimulating more like it) piece that involved constantly changing coloured lights, audio clips from radio shows, and theatrical elements consisting of odd and awkward puppet-like objects that moved and produced sounds.

The next work is Beyond the Trees: Wallpapers in Dialogue with Emily Carr. It involved giant projections of fluidly moving wallpapers that changed every few minutes, creating shifts in the atmosphere of the room. I only took pictures with the cute bright ones (lol of course) but many of the other wallpapers were dark and cloudy and reminded me of storms.

*casually adds smiley face bc I may or may not be flashing yall*
JASMINE IN ACTION

And that's the end of this post!!! Here's a pic of me at the last room of our lil VAG adventure (lmao). I call this face "when you realize there's no more art to look at"

Bye!!!! (▰˘◡˘▰) *:・゚✧

i got a tattoo!!!

So I finally got a tattoo after wanting one since forever!!! I took the above pic the next day after getting it and it looks so dry and gross but it's now fully healed and looking cute as hell :~) So I had wanted a tattoo for quite a while but the main issue was that I never really knew exactly what I wanted until I came across this tattoo as well as Olivia Harrison's instagram. So I really wanted a hand holding some sort of flowers and that's when Madalene and I found out that Olivia would be tattooing at a flash tattoo event at Black Medicine. Basically there would be 4 artists there with pre-drawn tats and you pick one, it gets crossed out so no one else can get it, and you get it done right there. So we went there with a couple other friends and lined up for 2 hours (we survived on mcdonalds dont worry). Luckily I was 10th in line so when we got in we went straight to Olivia's flash sheets and I was praying that she would have one of a hand (since she did a couple before) and to my luck she did!!!

Madz and I waiting after we chose our tattoos :~)
:O!!!! I was so nervous at this point lol my hands were sweating
right after I got it done!!!

So I got it on my left inner forearm (close to my elbow). I wasn't really sure what to expect in terms of the pain but it honestly wasn't bad at all!! I thought it would be a lot worse but it literally felt like someone scratching you hard. Plus vibration from the machine lol. In fact I was just laying there staring at the ceiling and I got kind of bored halfway through haha. While getting it done though I was telling Olivia about how I was quite fond of her hand tattoos and tattoos of hands in general and she said that she wasn't even going to put the tattoo that I chose on the flash sheet until the night before! She was like oh well and she threw it on the sheet anyway. She said she must've subconsciously heard my wish haha. I was so lucky!!! Anyway, the entire procedure took ~40 minutes and it costed $80 (not including tip). Madalene got a cute tattoo of 2 lavenders in a similar location to mine (hers is a little bit outer on her arm than mine - mine is like right in the middle of my forearm when I hold my arm out).

The tattoo shop was pretty cute too :~)

Afterwards we went to Matchstick Coffee Roasters in Chinatown because it was super close (about a block or two away) and it was really cute in there!! I got an iced latte as did another friend, and Madalene got a hot chocolate.

dat saran wrap

So yeah!!! My mom wasn't very pleased with the fact that I got a tattoo but she seems to just pretend it doesn't exist anymore (she hasn't said anything or even looked at it since the night I showed it to her when I got home lol) and my dad doesn't seem to care. So oh well. I mean it's not like they can get rid of it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway I think some people may feel like what I did was quite rash and naive since I just went and picked out a random tattoo as my first one (which is basically what I did lol) but in all honesty different people have different opinions and perspectives when it comes to tattoo. Obviously some people believe that tattoos must have a meaning and a story behind it but personally for me, I like tattoos because I see them as a nice piece of art on your skin. A lot of people seem to enjoy looking down upon people who get tattoos without a special meaning to them or making them feel bad by saying things like "you're going to regret that in the future" and whatnot which I think is absolutely ridiculous. If I really like a tattoo and it makes me happy because I think it's a beautiful little work of art on my arm, why should I be made to feel guilty about it? Besides, had I not gotten my first one done so spontaneously I feel like I would have continued putting off getting a tattoo and probably end up never getting one. Welp that's just my oniOn :~)))

To end this post here's a pic of a building I spotted while waiting in line ଘ(੭ ᐡ ᵕ ᐡ)੭* ✩ ♡ ˚

garden party, ice cream tacos, grad (not mine), tina's bday :-)

So on may 9 Madalene and I went to this garden party thing on campus!!! Photographer sneaked a pic of us lol

Pre-garden party. I was late..... as usual.... but anyway I think Madz forgave me :-) *halo emoji*

The party itself was meh... kinda lame to be honest lol. I'm not sociable at all and it was pretty awkward and it was like just people sitting around talking to their friends. At least the outdoor space was cute though with fairy lights and balloons and stuff. But yeah. There weren't any highlights or anything interesting that particularly comes to mind.

Check out this pic of Madz and I though hahaha we were on the bus on our way there and we were like omg lets take a pic of us blissfully looking out the window!! Luv it

Then 2 days later, my summer school courses started (it feels weird typing it now because I just had my last lecture yesterday!!! it's a 6 week course which really goes to show how inactive I've been on this blog). It's math 221 which is matrix algebra/linear algebra.

The next day we had a cute lil Madajaskar reunion at Rain or Shine Ice Cream!! It was their Taco Tuesday which is an adorable ice cream taco :-)

The place itself was so cute (look at dat wallpaper and unicorn thing with an ice cream cone as the horn!!!). Fortunately when we got there, there weren't too many people and they had eventually cleared out. We sat there for a while shamelessly taking selfies with the ice cream wallpaper haha but then all of a sudden a bunch of high schoolers started coming in and we realized it was a bit past 3pm aka when kids are off school so we left.

Unfortunately about an hour after eating the ice cream I started feeling really bloated and a bit gassy and ugh :-( I don't even know if I'm lactose intolerant but sometimes dairy products like that make me get super bloated and my stomach feels weird for a day or two which is what happened this time. I'm thinking about trying some Lactaid pills or something haha. I guess the true test will be taking Lactaid pills and going back to Rain or Shine again lol

Afterwards we went to Oakridge Centre because we didn't really know what to do. We ended up going to Oak+Fort and buying matching friendship bracelets!!!

It was so perfect because they had 3 colours and we all wanted different ones! Mine is the gold one, Karman's is silver, and Madalene's is rose gold. The holy trinity!!! Also omg my hand is so dark compared to theirs. It's probably from LA though since I was out in the sun so much with my hands exposed.

Then a couple weeks later it was my sister's grad!!! She graduated from UBC with a BSc in geology.

(unfortunately my bro was busy that day!!)

The ceremony itself wasn't as boring as I thought it would be. This is because people with a major in physics were also in this ceremony and during while presenting the PhDs they would briefly summarize the graduate's research and it was really interesting hearing some of them. I think there was one guy who specialized in relativity or something and he studied space time and how black holes are like a finite tunnel into the next dimension??? That was actually really fascinating

When the saturday came, it was my friend Tina's birthday (well not quite because her actual bday was in the middle of the coming week) so we went to the Pint! I didn't get any pics that night except for selfies on her bed while waiting for her to get ready so here's one for yall :-)

On the monday 2 days later, the new Student Union Building at school opened up (finally..... after delaying its opening for like a millennium). It was actually really cool in there haha take a look

dat yellow aesthetic staircase *_* this staircase literally went up from the ground floor up to the 4th floor?? 5th?? how many fucking floors are there idek

These pics really don't do this building justice!!! Going up to the very top and looking down was so incredible because you could see pieces of each floor and it was so tall and big and open and I swear if I had accidentally dropped my phone down the middle I probably would've killed someone. But anyway unfortunately like half of it wasn't even finished yet?? Like nothing is open and everything is still taped up and there's like temporary handrails along the stairs. As annoying as that was I can't wait to see the new SUB completely finished and fully furnished!!

That's about it for this post!! I have I think 4 more posts that I have for yall before I'm caught up. Pce :-))

LA!!!

Hello!!!! I died but I've come back to life

I have tons tons tons of upcoming posts since I haven't updated this blog in 4ever so don't mind me.

Okay so I returned from my lil trip to LA like a month and a half ago so I'm finally making a post about it!!! There's 100+ pics in this post so I'm gonna do that lil jump break thingy so it doesn't make my blog super fucked up on whatever page this post is on lol so yeah eNJOY!!!

block party :-)

So last friday it was the last day of classes and block party!!! I'm so glad I decided to go to block party this year (I couldn't go last year since it's 19+) it's such a stress reliever and you can just get drunk and forget about the fact that finals are coming up *dies a lil inside* :-)

OK I gotta say I am really feelin myself in this selfie!!!! We look so cute and we look so sober hahaha!! I wish my phone camera worked so I could take more pictures but oh well

Yesterday evening I wrote my astronomy final. I'm so mad because it was completely on the post-midterm material so it wasn't even cumulative, but I swear my prof didn't say that so I studied like everything!!!! Unless he mentioned it during the second last class..... where my friend and I left early..... anyway I'm very sad about the fact that this course is now over bc I probably won't see my lecture crush ever again and like you know when you actually want to go to class because you get to be in the presence of your lecture crush???? *sigh*

Anyway my math final is on thursday and my physics final is on the monday after that and I'm so nervous about those two exams :-( On a brighter note, 1 week and 5 days until I'm off to LA!!!! I'm so excited. My friend and I have planned out more than half our trip now (day-to-day stuff, we're planning on hitting up different areas of LA each day). I think out of all the places we plan on visiting, I'm most excited to go to Santa Monica :-) Anyway, until then, I gotta study my ass off

untitled #21

Tomorrow is the last day of classes!!! And it's also Block Party!!!! I wish I could just skip my classes but unfortunately I have a quiz for physics and for astronomy we have a bunch of Clicker questions worth marks that will act as a practice for the final since my prof is pulling these questions out of past exams. Like way to make us come to class on the last day.

I'm so stressed because my astronomy final is coming up in exactly one week and I don't know anything!!! I mean the material itself isn't very difficult at all but there is just so much to memorize and I don't have time for this!!! I remember for the astronomy course I took in the previous term I barely studied for the midterm and final because I found everything in the lecture to be so fascinating and interesting that I'd take it all in and then go home and tell my sister about what I learned though I don't think she really cared. But anyway!!! This course however is a bit dry in my opinion despite having a much more interesting course name (last term was intro the solar system, this term I'm taking intro to stars and galaxies). But I guess I'll just have to read and memorize stuff and hope for the best.

I'm super concerned about calculus and physics however. I mean my math is coming up in exactly 2 weeks but I really have to do well on the final because I need a good mark on the course. I mean both my midterms I was well above class average but the class averages were incredibly low it's not exactly something to be proud of. The thing about this course is that I'm always more confident about my knowledge of the material than I should be. For both of the midterms I walked out of them feeling good and upon receiving them after marking I was pretty disappointed. Needless to say I just need to do TONS of practice problems and past exams and hopefully my final will go well. For physics I am so so sooooo behind it's like actually embarrassing. My final is all the way on the 27th though so I have 2 and a half weeks but with math and astronomy to study for as well, it's not very much time. There is just so much reading involved in this course which I detest but I'm gonna have to just do it. On the plus side we get to bring cheat sheets into the exam. They haven't yet specified how many we get to bring but last year for phys 101 we got to bring in 12 papers and we could double-side each one!!! However I don't think they will allow that many this time haha.

ALSO LA IS LESS THAN 3 WEEKS AWAY!!!!! My friend and I haven't even planned out much of our trip yet (mostly my fault because I barely have any free time nowadays) and I haven't even thought of what clothes I'm going to be bringing etc!!! I'm so excited to just finish my exams and then go to LA though ahhhh!!

I don't really have much else to say!! I should be doing my mastering physics assignment right now but I'm taking a break........ as usual. Okay bye (I'll leave yall with a song)

a lame update abt my life

Wow I haven't posted in forever!!!! (I feel like I start most of my posts off with something like this) but honestly nothing much has happened between when I last posted and now so it's alright.

My nike af1s that I ordered from Foot Locker finally came in in the beginning of march and yay!!! Luckily it was pretty sunny around that time so I got to wear them out a lot :-) I'm trying super hard to keep them as white as possible. Lately vancouver's just been so rainy and gross so I haven't been wearing them but honestly even when it's sunny I gotta try so hard to keep em clean because there's so much damn construction at ubc right now (it's ridiculous!!!) and all the construction trucks and stuff get mud everywhere.......

Also in the beginning of march my phone camera stopped working :-( so I haven't taken pictures like at all (except for a week ago when my friend let me use her samsung to take selfies tHANK THE LORD but samsung cameras are so weird>??? idk they just dont take pictures the same as iphones..... but i had to do what I had to do). Like I'm pretty sure the physical camera is ok but my phone is just messed because the camera doesnt work on any apps and it's just a black screen and I cant switch to front camera or take pics or anything *sigh*!!!!

So lately I've been staying at school so late and studying all the time bc it's honestly time for me to get my shit together!!! I had a math midterm just like last week on mar 18 and I'm so sad because I did a lot worse on it than I was expected :-( Honestly I started studying so late for it however my friend and I studied so hard during the days prior to it which I'm so proud of but I know that had we started studying earlier, we probably would've gotten a lot better. I mean like compared to the class avg my mark was a lot higher (class avg was 52% and my mark was 65%) but regardless.....I can't say that I'm proud of my C+ u_u anyway time to work my ass off for finals and pray to the basedgod that I WILL ACE DAT SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

OK AND FINALLY I SAVED THE BEST NEWS FOR LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LITERALLY RIGHT AFTER MY LAST FINAL (well not literally right after..... more like a day after) I'M GOING TO LA WITH A FRIEND FOR 6 DAYS!!!! I'm so freaking excited yall dont even know!!!! Cali is one of those places that I love love love and dream about and im so excited to visit!!! I've been there once when I was like 10?? 11??? but that was nothing. Also this will be my first time travelling independently (like w/o my family) and I'm just so so os sososoooooo ooooo happy and excited and aahhhHHH!!! I've booked my flights and place to stay and everything already :-)) I'm gonna cry this is so exciting!! BUT I need to fix my phone camera asap so I can take a billion pics and flood everyone's ig feeds w my LA pix and geotag the shit out of them!!!!

BUT FIRST I must study for my exams and stuff but I'm so excited!!!! (how many times have I said that im excited??? lol)

OK THAT IS ALL!!! back to doing math now pce!!!

P.S. ive been listening to old mgmt and empire of the sun songs from 5 yrs ago and it's making me so emotional!!!! can't stop listening to "we are the people" I cant believe I forgot this song existed

Also the sound of 'riptide' by vance joy makes me think about being young n stuff and travelling and going on adventures idk why!!! (although its probably totally unrelated 2 that)
